So... Do you ever start a project and it initially goes very well and you think it’s going to turn out nice, but then you finally put all the pieces together and think, “Oh no, what have I done!?” Well, I had one of those moments today.
A customer asked me if I could do a Shih Tzu puzzle a while ago, and I decided to give it a go. I didn’t have a Shih Tzu puzzle pattern, so I had to make one. The customer was there while I was looking for coloring pages to base the design on, and they really liked this one, so I went with it. But transforming this coloring page into a puzzle pattern was more difficult than I had anticipated... It uses varied line thicknesses to emulate shadows, which you can’t do in a puzzle, so while I was cutting the thing out I basically had to guess where the actual shape of the dog was. This actually went pretty well for the dog’s body, but then came the head. It’s pretty complicated with lots of small, intricate details and a bow, which I ended up having to use my wood burning kit for. And the eyes in the coloring page were not going to work so those had to change as well. By the time I had modified the original design enough for it to actually work as a puzzle, I ended up with this... thing:
Yeah... That is most definitely NOT a Shih Tzu or any dog I’ve ever seen... It looks more like some sort of baby dwarf. With... I dunno, a book on its head?
Guess it’s back to the drawing board with this one... Baby Gimli will remain one of a kind.
The moral of the story? Shih Tzu happens.

It’s not THAT bad. If it was supposed to end up painted, I could even see it as usable. But yeah, so close and yet so far!

I don’t really paint my puzzles, so I try to make sure all the detail it needs is actually cut into the wood. Usually I can make it work, and this one almost worked, but then it didn’t. At least I can always just start over with a different design.

Angry Chewbacca. With a bow on his head.

Maybe he’s angry because of the bow on his head...

I see a solution with two puzzle pieces in the eyes and one in the mouth. Not sure why it wouldn’t be feasible either.

I like how you blend the... Uh... “connection bits” into the overall design.

That dog actually looks like it's saying, "Oh no, what have I done!?"

The longer I look at this, the harder I laugh.

I dunno if that’s a dwarf or not, but I’m pretty sure it’s evil

Am I doing it right?

The proper term is “keys”. But thank you! I find it’s the best way to make a puzzle look natural.

Yes. And I’m totally saving that for later.
